Portuguese is spoken not only in Portugal but also in Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, and other regions. Portuguese is one of the most spoken languages globally. It is the sixth most spoken language in the world by the number of native speakers.

Levels In Portuguese

Proficiency levels in the Portuguese language are typically described using various scales and frameworks that help learners assess their abilities and set goals for their language learning journey. The CEFR is a widely recognized framework for assessing language proficiency in European languages, and it can be applied to Portuguese as well. It has six levels.

Level: A1

Duration: 50 Hours

  • You can Greet and Meet people. You’ll be able to structure short sentences and lead informal conversations in your day-to-day activities.

  • You can Have basic discussions in places like restaurants, cafés, and hotels when making reservations, getting directions, purchasing, selling, etc.

  • At this level, the grammar rules, parts of speech, and a few other fundamentals would be presented.

  • After completing Level 1, you can speak, write, listen, and read Portuguese fairly for your survival in the native country.

Level: A2

Duration: 60 Hours

  • You can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. 

  • You can communicate through simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar matters.

  • At this level, the grammatical components, such as the parts of speech, tenses, connectors, and other fundamentals, would be covered.

  • You will differentiate yourself from the novices at this level. Since the student will be covering the entire A2 component at this level, you should begin practicing by working through the international A2 examination activities.

Level: B1.1/ B1.2

Duration: 30 Hours/ 30 Hours

  • You can understand the main points of clear standard language on familiar matters.

  • You can create simple, connected texts on topics that are familiar to you or of personal interest. 

  • You can describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions and give brief reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. 

  • This level can be really helpful in boosting your confidence and enabling you to delve further into the language!

  • You will be able to construct complicated phrases at this level, offer requests and recommendations, and outline upcoming events.

Level: B2.1/ B2.2

Duration: 40 Hours /40 Hours

  • You can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics. 

  • You can communicate fluently, and regular conversations with native speakers are easily possible without any stress. 

  • You can create clear, detailed texts on a variety of topics and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of different options. 

  • These frameworks provide a structured way to assess and describe your proficiency in Portuguese, which can be helpful for setting goals, tracking progress, and determining your language skills in various situations, such as academic and professional contexts or for travel and personal communication.

Level: C1.1/ C1.2

Duration: 40 Hours/ 40 Hours

  • You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit  meaning. 
  • You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without having to search for  expression too clearly. 
  • You can use the language flexibly and effectively for social, educational and  professional purposes.

Level: C2.1/ C2.2

Duration: 40 Hours /40 Hours

  • You possess the ability to understand everything you hear or read easily.

  • You can summarize information from a variety of spoken and written sources.

  • You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently, and accurately, recognizing finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations. 

These frameworks provide a structured way to assess and describe your proficiency in Portuguese, which can be helpful for setting goals, tracking progress, and determining your language skills in various situations, such as academic and professional contexts or for travel and personal communication.
